USA: #tbt a little oldie from 1989 of me writing rhymes for a hip-hop track at my beloved SHAUNA HOODES apartment in uptown Manhattan. Shauna is not only one of the first ever female white rappers from back in the day, an awesome visual artist, poet and all around forward thinker.. but she also is the first person I ever saw really do her “own thing” on a TASCAM 4-TRACK cassette recorder, experiences which inspired me to one day produce my own music without depending on anyone’s opinions or “tastes”. This particular tune eventually almost ended on a DICKIES album (yes, the punk legends) because they were toying with the idea of experimenting with rap like DEE DEE RAMONE had just done a few months earlier, but eventually the plans were scrapped in the end. Big love to my super brother Jon OMEN who was my co-defendant on the track. Was a thrilling time seeing shows by LORD FINESSE, JUNGLE BOTHERS, NICE & SMOOTH, STETSASONIC, SPECIAL ED, BIG DADDY KANE, 3rd BASS, KOOL G RAP & POLO, ULTRAMAGNETIC and loads more with NYC busting at the seams with energy and creativity. oh and… NAS hadn’t’t even dropped ILLMATIC yet. Oh LORDY!!! Blessed.
