1993 Throwback

A #TBT photo from 1993 playing live with KING CHANGO at New York’s SOB’s. On that night King Chango were the opening band for the legendary SKATALITES and for SPECIAL BEAT, a group which comprised members of THE SPECIALS and THE ENGLISH BEAT and who on that night featured the awesome PAULINE BLACK from THE SELECTER on lead vocals. Needless to say, it was mind-blowing to be in a dressing room with so many ska legends and personal idols and it was a delight to discover just how down to earth, friendly and encouraging they were to the up and coming artists. The brilliant John Bradbury and I spoke at lengths about some of the soul, funk and blues music we both loved and he was super excited about upcoming plans to record some new Specials material with Tim and Lars from Rancid, who were coming to visit him in England in a few weeks time. A truly inspirational night. Much love to Ruben, Pulpo, Glenda and Negrito from King Chango and above all maximum RESPECT to the great BLANQUITO MAN, who’s vibrant music and spirt will live on with us long after his recent passing and to JOHN BRADBURY for sharing his gifts with us. BLESSINGS.
